Abetting Beijing’s Burglars
The Great Heist: China’s Epic Campaign to Steal America’s Secrets, by David R. Shedd and Andrew Badger, New York: Harper, 2025, 362 pages, hardcover.
There is a geostrategic struggle going on, with the Chinese Communists being on the offensive against the United States and the West — even as we have essentially been subsidizing Beijing’s efforts. The Great Heist: China’s Epic Campaign to Steal America’s Secrets is largely about the extent of the state-sponsored espionage — directed at intellectual property, technology, and data — but it also exposes how our reactions have been counterproductive to national security.
We are reminded of the extent to which China has employed cyberattacks and other undercover activities to pilfer restricted information — closing technological gaps by illegally reverse-engineering as well as by spying. As a result, current major media accounts, even those generally considered to be “conservative,” are reporting that Beijing is now building an arms industry that rivals the West.
