The Last Word | Can We Turn Back the Clock?
Those of us with experience in aging understand that the march of time is relentless. Turning back the clock is a purely figurative notion refuted every day by the brutish reality of graying hair, ebbing strength, death, decay, and change.
Why, then, are we so eager to recapture past glories? Why uphold the nostalgic banners of the past as standards for the present and the future? In particular, why would anyone want to undo the blessings of progress that we now enjoy?
As someone born in the 1960s, and who can recollect a world without PCs, smartphones, the internet, dental implants, and many of the miracles of modern medicine, I know that neither I nor anyone of my generation would want to inhabit a world without these things. And the world my parents and grandparents grew up in was more backward still. In the West, at least, we have managed to overcome much of the Hobbesian nastiness and brutishness of the human existence, and no one of sound mind would want to turn back the clock on technology.
