The Last Word | Which Way, USA?

Alongside our articles in this issue about Just War principles, war powers, and the economics of the Iran War, we ought to review another aspect of U.S. foreign policy: the National Security Strategy (NSS).

In the 2025 NSS, released December 4, the Trump administration was unambiguous: “To ensure that America remains the world’s strongest, richest, most powerful, and most successful country for decades to come, our country needs a coherent, focused strategy for how we interact with the world.”

While most Americans would appreciate the above statement and find it fairly innocuous, further on, the document makes a bold assertion: “After the end of the Cold War, American foreign policy elites convinced themselves that permanent American domination of the entire world was in the best interests of our country.” That’s a welcome admission that should please many America First patriots, as the NSS goes on to reject the idea of global dominance for America.
