Walk into the City Council chambers in Clovis, California, and you’ll immediately know what makes the city tick. The newly placed words “IN GOD WE TRUST” now adorn the wall behind the dais, thanks to a citizen-driven project funded by private donations. Those responsible gathered on March 18, when the words were installed, to celebrate the culmination of what began as a grassroots proposal. It ended up uniting the community in honoring our national motto and reminding visitors that the people of Clovis have their priorities in order.
A Historic Installation: Bringing the National Motto Home
The addition of those four simple words was more than a mere change to the chamber. It was a heartfelt affirmation of Clovis’ values and an acknowledgment of what makes our nation great. Mayor Vong Mouanoutoua, Mayor Pro Tem Diane Pearce, and Council Member Drew Bessinger joined community leaders in witnessing the installation. Two people appeared especially in the spotlight for having spearheaded the effort: Clovis John Birch Society (JBS) Chapter Leader Bill Scott, and Assistant Chapter Leader Kathy Reinhardt.
Their months of dedicated effort resulted in a unanimous 5-0 vote by the City Council on February 9. The chamber now stands as a beacon of what happens when citizens roll up their sleeves and make their voices heard. As one local leader put it, this achievement shows that “we can make a difference, and everyone should try — especially in our local communities.”
