Socialism Rejected

Steve Bonta

AT A GLANCE

• Argentina succumbed to the siren song of socialism.

• Like other countries where socialism has been tried, the results were not good.

• However, unlike other countries still mired in socialism, Argentina has found a way out.

From an American vantage point, the trend toward Big Government socialism and civilizational decline might seem like an inevitable one-way street. For several generations now, we seem to have punched a one-way ticket on the road to serfdom. No matter which party is in power, the size and cost of government continue to grow and grow, even as our culture deviates further and further from our traditional Judeo-Christian roots. In many respects, America is already a socialist country.

But all is emphatically not lost. As the poisoned fruit of socialism becomes a more familiar taste, some countries have begun the process of repudiating leftism and re-enshrining limited government, free-market capitalism, and Western civilizational values.

Consider Eastern Europe. Several former Soviet-bloc countries have become havens of freedom and champions of Western civilization, setting a high bar for lethargic Western European socialist countries. Hungary was perhaps the first such, establishing firm border controls and unabashedly championing Western and Christian values under the leadership of Viktor Orbán. Orbán was routinely reviled as “authoritarian” by the leftist media, but Hungary’s prosperity and stability speak for themselves. Poland is pursuing similar policies, which have resulted in a booming economy and the lowest crime rates in Europe, in addition to robust individual liberties. And the Czech Republic is moving in a similar direction, with one of the world’s highest standards of living now complemented by one of Europe’s freest constitutions, which was recently amended to include a Second Amendment-like protection of the right to own firearms — the only such constitutional provision anywhere in Europe.
