Vol. 42, No. 09
Caitlin Clark, the WNBA, and America’s Culture War
AT A GLANCE
• Caitlin Clark’s hard work, competitive spirit, and God-given abilities have made her a superstar.
• Her rapid transformation of women’s basketball is known as the “Caitlin Clark Effect.”
• Much more is in play on the court than great basketball.
• Also on display is the harassment against her by the intolerant Left for failing to toe the woke line.
When Caitlin Clark entered the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in 2024, she did more than become the top overall draft pick. She became the face of a league that suddenly found itself enjoying record television ratings, sold-out arenas, soaring merchandise sales, and unprecedented media attention and corporate sponsorships.
Her fame has only grown since. On July 17, Clark scored a new career- and league-high 45 points in a single game, outstripping her own previous career high of a 35-point game during her rookie season. She also scored her 200th career three-pointer, reaching that milestone more quickly than any other player in league history, and set the record for the fastest to reach 600 assists.
But Clark is more than a sports celebrity. Last year, as the University of Iowa (UI) retired her jersey number 22, she awarded $22,000 in grants to local charities, one of which was the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where she had made frequent visits to patients during her days as a student athlete. Through the Caitlin Clark Foundation, which she founded in October 2023, she has awarded hundreds of thousands more to youth-oriented causes.
