Democratic Socialists Surging
AT A GLANCE
• Warning against “communist infiltration” in America was once besmirched as paranoia.
• Fast-forward to today, and politicians who openly embrace socialism are now electable.
• Such is the case with politicians belonging to the Democratic Socialists of America.
• Yet how much do voters really know about their political positions and ambitions?
The greatest threat to American liberty will arrive on its shores not in the form of a direct, external military assault by a foreign power, but instead through the deliberate, gradual, internal subversion of the country’s institutions. Establishment insiders and gatekeepers in government, the media, and academia have long dismissed notions of “communist infiltration” of the government as “paranoid conspiracy theory.” Yet despite the big-government impulses of both the Democratic and Republican Parties, the outright, radical, pro-Marxist Left has been largely contained to the fringes of American politics.
However, this might all be changing, as politicians aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are becoming increasingly popular among younger Democratic Party voters. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and other House members of “the Squad,” and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are prime examples. On top of this, the recent electoral victories of DSA candidates in Democratic Party congressional primaries in New York City and Denver increase the possibility of outright, unapologetic Marxists being elected to power.
Unlike many liberal Democratic or progressive politicians of the past, who could be described as “fellow travelers” sympathetic or friendly to socialism and socialist goals, DSA members are acknowledged socialists. The DSA openly advocates for “collective ownership” and other Marxist beliefs, and they have their eyes set on replacing free-market enterprise and republican government with socialist total government, drastically shifting the Overton window to the left. What was once dismissed as conspiracy theory is now increasingly out in the open.
