Globalist Influence Behind U.S. Foreign Policy

William P. Hoar

Chokepoints: American Power in the Age of Economic Warfare, by Edward Fishman, New York: Portfolio/Penguin, 2025, 558 pages, hardcover.

If all the world’s a stage, then there will always be those who believe they have a better script about how to reshape it. Military force, of course, remains one path to dramatic change. But that’s not the only way to control our destiny as a nation. The “chokepoints” alluded to in the title of Chokepoints: American Power in the Age of Economic Warfare by Edward Fishman refer to economic warfare in general, along with microchip technology, energy supply chains — including rare earths, fossil fuels, and nuclear power — and the weaponization of strategic financial institutions. The story is also about those who seek to remake the globe, both well-known players and the unsung laboring in the wings.

The script at hand largely covers contemporary events, with sections from 2006 to the near-present, broken down into economic weapons first deployed against Iran, then used against Russia (when Moscow took over Crimea), then aimed at China and its technology moves, and again directed at Russia following its subsequent invasion of Ukraine. It begins with short dives into older times, from Pericles to Saddam Hussein, and concludes with an examination of the current world economy.
