Was “Cold Fusion” Prematurely Put on Ice?

Jeff Lindsay

AT A GLANCE

• According to conventional wisdom, cold fusion cannot achieve a net energy output — and previous attempts have failed.

• The late Dr. Melvin Miles said to his dying day that either cold fusion is real, or he is a liar.

• Miles began his cold-fusion experimentation as a skeptic, but ended up a true believer.

• If cold fusion is real, it would mean that energy resources would become virtually unlimited.

Dr. Melvin H. Miles, a scientist for the U.S. Navy and also my uncle, was given a challenging assignment on the day that the controversial discovery of “cold fusion” was announced: investigate that phenomenon and see if it might be real. What he found would gradually dissolve his skepticism — and damage his career.

Decades later, as my wife and I approached his home in St. George, Utah, we noticed a small placard that we had never seen anywhere else: “Cold Fusion Is Real.” Two hours after we sat with him and asked about his years of research work for the U.S. Navy, we heard that phrase again. After summarizing his findings, he looked me in the eye and said with conviction, “Either cold fusion is real, or I’m a liar.” From a good man noted for his frankness and honesty, this was a powerful statement.

That was the first of five interviews I had with him discussing cold fusion. My last visit was on October 7, 2025; he passed away on October 20, 2025, at the age of 88. What he found and experienced may be important not just for the scientific, political, and business communities, but for anyone seeking a more abundant world where freedom and truth prevail.
