As Impeachment Inquiry Looms, Mayorkas Blames Border Crisis on “Climate Change”

In an interview on MSNBC that aired on Wednesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas blamed climate change for the Biden administration’s ongoing failure to address concerns about what many are calling an invasion at America’s southern border. Mayorkas made the absurd claim while Republican lawmakers took the first steps to impeach him over the utter failure of his department and the Biden administration to control the border.

In December, 302,000 illegal immigrants were recorded crossing the border into the United States, which followed 242,000 illegal crossings in November. Mayorkas told MSNBC that the surge is due to “effects of climate change, poverty, [and an] increasing level of authoritarianism.”

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) introduced articles of impeachment in November. The impeachment resolution ultimately failed, but was referred to House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green’s (R-Tenn.) Committee on Homeland Security.

“For almost three years, the American people have demanded an end to the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border, and they have also rightly called for Congress to hold accountable those responsible,” Green said in a statement. “That’s why the House Committee on Homeland Security led a comprehensive investigation into the causes, costs, and consequences of this crisis. Our investigation made clear that this crisis finds its foundation in Secretary Mayorkas’ decision-making and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress, and that his failure to fulfill his oath of office demands accountability. The bipartisan House vote in November to refer articles of impeachment to my Committee only served to highlight the importance of our taking up the impeachment process — which is what we will begin doing next Wednesday.”

Mayorkas said that he would “most certainly” comply with the impeachment inquiry.

Green’s announcement came as he and 60 other GOP representatives embarked on a tour of the border situation at Eagle Pass, Texas.

In addition to “climate change,” Mayorkas also laid blame on Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Abbott has bused nearly 100,000 illegal immigrants gathered in Texas over the past year to “sanctuary cities” such as New York and Chicago, who have loudly complained about Abbott’s measures.

“Let me identify one fundamental problem here,” Mayorkas told MSNBC. “That is the fact that we have one governor, in the state of Texas, who is refusing to cooperate with other governors and other local officials to coordinate efforts to address a challenge that this country … is facing. And it’s a remarkable failure of governance to refuse to cooperate with fellow local and state officials.”

In a post on X, Abbott called Mayorkas “pathetic.”

“Climate change?” Abbott asked. “Mayorkas is pathetic. The REAL reason illegal immigration records are being set is because Biden refuses to enforce immigration laws. We will send more buses and planes. We will continue building the razor wire walls that Biden wants to tear down.”

The Biden administration stood four-square behind Mayorkas, with DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg telling the Daily Mail that there was “no valid basis to impeach Secretary Mayorkas.”

Unfortunately, while the southern border burns, Mayorkas and the entire Biden administration continue to fiddle.

“I was on the Hill yesterday to provide technical advice in those ongoing negotiations,” Mayorkas told MSNBC. “Before I headed to the Hill, I was in the office working on solutions. After my visit to the Hill, I was back in my office, working on solutions. That’s what we do in the Department of Homeland Security. That’s what this administration is focused on — solutions to problems.”

What “solutions”? Mayorkas doesn’t even seem to understand that there’s a problem when it comes to the border. On Thursday, when asked by Fox News’ Bret Baier if he would accept increased funding for his department on the condition that the funding could only be used for the detention and removal of illegal immigrants, Mayorkas said he would not.

“The funds are needed to provide the Department of Homeland Security with more Border Patrol agents. The funds are needed to provide the Department of Homeland Security with more technology. The funds are needed to provide our department with more detention space — to provide the Department of Justice with more immigration judges so justice can be administered more swiftly,” Mayorkas argued.

Unfortunately, any ouster of Mayorkas would be a symbolic victory only. As long as Joe Biden remains at the head of the federal government, any replacement is certain to be another left-wing ideologue incapable of seeing any reason to close the border. The ridiculous notion that climate change is somehow responsible for the increase in illegal border crossings is a Biden talking point. Mayorkas is only toeing the company line.
