Update on the Deep State

Six years ago, a man could be laughed out of a dinner party for using the phrase “deep state” without air quotes around it. Today the same phrase runs in the headlines of the papers that once treated it as a symptom. The facts did not change. What changed is that the machine got careless. It grew large enough to be seen from the road.
Alex Newman’s first volume, Deep State: The Invisible Government Behind the Scenes, published in 2020, told Americans what their government had become. Deep State 2.0 tells them what it has done since. The distance between the two books is the distance between a warning and an indictment.
