From the Publisher | Issues That Matter
If the events of the first few days of 2026 are any indication, this year will be a time of rapid and perhaps shocking change. As I write these words, the American intervention in Venezuela is dominating the news cycle, with the momentous goings-on in Iran a close second. While we at The New American stay abreast of the daily news ephemera — the latest bombing, the most recent controversy from President Donald Trump’s Truth Social feed, the vicissitudes of the economy, and so forth — we remain, as ever, focused on the issues that truly matter and on the principles that undergird them.
For example, in anticipation of likely U.S. military action in Venezuela, we decided to publish in last month’s issue an in-depth article on the Monroe Doctrine, believing that it would soon be a dominant topic among the media talking heads and podcasters. And voilà! No sooner did that issue roll off the presses, than everyone began talking about the “Donroe Doctrine” and whether the president was justified in sending troops to snatch Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife. We will have much more to say about the Venezuelan action in future issues; suffice it to say that anticipating such events, while not an exact science, has always been our stock in trade, and is made easier by our focus on principles and on the agendas of the people who truly drive world events — the Insiders, as we sometimes style them.
So, what about this issue, where we focus on the warnings of eminent economist and investor Peter Schiff, justly famous for correctly predicting the 2007 market collapse and subsequent Great Recession? Schiff was roundly ridiculed 20 years ago by court economists such as Arthur Laffer, all of whom thought the economy was in wonderful shape. Schiff, however — a rare example of an investor who truly understands how finances work, including the insidious causes and effects of inflation — was unmoved, because he grasped economic principles. Unlike most of his contemporaries, he was able to separate the distractions from the reality of what was taking place below the surface and beyond the ken of the vacuous analysts who constitute the financial news cadre.
