Do Tariffs Cause War? Mises Fellow Explains
Can tariffs encourage foreign conflict?
In short, yes, explains Cruz Marquis, a summer research fellow at the Mises Institute, to The New American’s Andrew Muller at the Young Americans for Liberty’s national convention in Cincinatti, Ohio.
According to Marquis, tariffs cause a “deadweight loss,” while alternatively, open trade pacifies potentially hostile nations. To drive the point home, quoting French economist Frederic Bastiat, Marquis shared that “When goods don’t cross borders, soldiers will.”
Returning to the Austrian school of economic thought—free markets without government interference—is key to national economic restoration, he explained.
