Marriage Certificate, DNA Evidence Might Prove Omar Married Brother; Dershowitz Predicts Denaturalization, Deportation
A British marriage certificate might prove that Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota — also known as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a federal court document says — did indeed marry her brother, Ahmed Elmi.
The marriage certificate is not Omar’s, but instead her sister’s, the New York Post reported in a roundup of clues about the Somali congresswoman’s curious marital history.
Days ago, the Post revealed that federal agents, who raided the far-left refugee’s home on October 12, collected DNA evidence that could prove Omar married her brother and committed immigration fraud.
Legal scholar Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax’s Greta Van Susteren yesterday that the federal raid on Omar’s home portends big trouble for the congresswoman. The statute of limitations will not cover Omar if she committed immigration fraud, and she will likely be denaturalized and deported, he said.

The Certificate
Omar has a complex marital history that involves a web of relationships with three men. One of them is Elmi, whom Omar married in 2009 and divorced in 2017. She is now married to political consultant Tim Mynett.
But her “family background is split across continents and complicated by Somalian paperwork being lost or destroyed,” the Post observed:
Her mother is said to have died when she was young and her family is said to be split, with one branch in the UK and one in the US.
Elmi’s parentage is not known, but he lived in London with Leila Nur Said, a Somali woman who is thought to be Omar’s sister, who possibly raised him.
The newspaper obtained a British marriage certificate, dated 1997, that lists Leila’s father as Somali Nur Said Elmi. The Post continued:
Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed also went by the name Nur Said Elmi and was a prominent military commander in the Somali dictatorship, which millions fled from.
Multiple sources have told The Post they believe the person listed on the British legal document is Nur, Omar’s father.

On Facebook, the Post continued, Omar’s father called himself Nur Said. His and Leila’s profiles are linked, she “proudly left ‘hearts’ on his pictures.”
When the former Somali colonel died in 2020 at 67, “well-wishers took to social media to pay tribute to ‘Nur Said Elmi’ and left messages of condolences for both Omar and Leila,” the Post explained.
Omar, says the government’s motion to block the unsealing of the federal search warrant, is an alias for Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.
From there, the Post summarized Omar’s marriages, as has The New American. Omar’s nuptial resumé is quite lengthy, and involves multiple marriages and divorces. After her latest divorce in 2017, she married political consultant Tim Mynett after an adulterous affair. Omar stole Mynett — who denied any such extramarital shenanigans — from his wife.
Omar married Elmi in 2009 and divorced him in 2017, yet “while legally married to Elmi, Omar had her third child with [her] previous husband, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi,” the Post continued:
Omar first applied for a marriage license with Hirsi in 2002, though she later said, “we never finalized the application and thus were never legally married.”
According to Omar, the pair separated in 2008, then reconciled around four years later, circa 2012, and married in 2018. The couple have three children together, born in 2003, 2005 and 2012.
However, from 2009 to 2017, Omar was legally married to Elmi. On their marriage application, both listed their marital address as a property in Columbia Heights, a suburb in Minneapolis. Hirsi also used that address for a business license.
Omar claims that she and Elmi split in 2011, but that it took a few years to finish the paperwork. It meant Omar had her third child with Hirsi while legally married to Elmi.
On top of that, The Post has previously reported joint tax filings between Omar and Hirsi in 2014 and 2015, while she was legally married to Elmi. Those filings were later corrected.
Omar’s divorce with Elmi was finalized in 2017, though he reportedly left the country to return to the UK well before it was completed.
How all this sex and child-bearing comports with Muslim law is unclear, but an important question given Omar’s claim to be an adherent of Islam.
When Omar appeared on MS NOW’s All In with Chris Hayes, the host asked whether she was related to Elmi. “Not to my knowledge,” Omar curiously answered.
DNA Collected; Dershowitz on Newsmax
Days ago, the Post revealed that federal agents collected genetic material from Omar’s home during the October 12 search.
“People familiar with the years-long criminal probe said the feds have made use of whistleblowers, government records and now obtained DNA in an effort to substantiate decade-old allegations that Omar — and possibly members of her family like her father — defrauded immigration authorities,” the Post reported, citing insiders:
One source said the DNA evidence was critical to proving an allegation that Omar married her brother when she wed Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009 because she was trying to help him get a green card — which never came to fruition.
It’s unclear whether the DNA was taken before or after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) searched the congresswoman’s home in Washington, DC, last Monday, when federal agents were seen exiting the bungalow with boxes marked “Seized Property Evidence.”
Whatever happens with the DNA, Dershowitz said, Omar is in “deep trouble.” A judge would not issue a search warrant for a pre-dawn raid on a member of Congress, he told The Record’s Van Susteren unless “something substantial” could be found.
“Assuming that that paperwork is never found, what happens? And what does Congress do about her?” Van Suseteren asked the Harvard law professor emeritus.
“Well, they have to prove — to have denaturalization, you have to prove fraud — that she got her original naturalization papers through fraud, either her own fraud or her father’s fraud that she was complicit with,” Dershowitz said:
Now, she, when she made the statement recently, makes the strongest case for why she’s probably in deep trouble. I have a lot of experience with search warrants, and usually they’re issued pretty easily, but not against a sitting congresswoman in her home in the District of Columbia. I think for this judge to have signed off on a search warrant to go to the house early in the morning to do all the things she said they did, there has to be very substantial evidence beyond just a mere probable cause claim that maybe a crime was committed. So, I think she’s in much, much deeper trouble than she is willing to admit.
Her answer to Chris Hayes — “not to my knowledge” — when he asked whether she was related to Elmi is a dog that won’t hunt, Dershowitz said.
“You’re either related to somebody or you’re not related to somebody,” he continued:
“Not to my knowledge” seems like a cop out. So I think this is the beginning of a much deeper search, which will end very, very likely in her denaturalization and deportation. Because remember, statute[s] of limitations that apply in criminal cases don’t apply in deportation and denaturalization cases, so they can go back a long time. Also, this could be a continuing crime if she has continued to say things like her birth date, which were part of a fraud, then the statute of limitations doesn’t hold. …
[S]he is probably in more serious trouble than she’d like us to believe.
Also in question, as The New American reported last week, is Omar’s age in her immigration papers. If she or her father falsified her age, they would have committed immigration fraud.
