Thirteen-year-old Hallie Turner of Raleigh, North Carolina, says she was “insanely inspired” by reading Al Gore’s global warming fantasy, An Inconvenient Truth. Thanks to that inspiration, Hallie has achieved global fame, while simultaneously striking a mighty blow for “climate justice.” The diminutive, fresh-faced teen is suing the State of North Carolina, according to her legal brief, “to have her government draft rules necessary to reduce greenhouse gasses, in particular carbon dioxide emissions, in order to do its part to stabilize our climate system and stop ocean acidification.”
How did this all come about? “I was [in] about third or fourth grade when the issue of climate change just came up at a dinner table conversation, and I had never really heard about it and I wanted to find out more about it,” Turner told local Raleigh news. “I read Al Gore’s book, An Inconvenient Truth, and that just insanely inspired me and opened my eyes to how big of an issue it was, and immediately after reading that I was amazed at how apathetic people were towards the issue.” The story was quickly gobbled up by Yahoo, Google, Al Jazeera, and other global media anxious to spread any “news” that fits the “manmade-CO2-is-frying-the-planet” narrative.
The young Miss Turner is not alone; the Gore-inspired insanity has spread afar. Hallie is one of a growing number of teens and pre-teens that have launched lawsuits aimed at forcing the federal government or state governments to implement the Al Gore/United Nations agenda.
The young litigants have not crafted their sophisticated legal arguments and organized their media campaigns on their own, of course. They are merely the props, the news hooks, for the latest round of sensationalism by the global-warming alarm choir, which has become increasingly desperate as the UN Climate Summit in Paris approaches and opinion polls show insufficient public support for the proposed global decarbonization policies. Hallie’s lawsuit is being financed and run by Our Children’s Trust (OCT), a non-profit based in Eugene, Oregon. In addition to Hallie Turner, youngsters have launched lawsuits or legal petitions in all 50 states, according to the OCT website. The organization states:
OUR CHILDREN’S TRUST supports youth and attorneys in various actions around the country, including cases now pending in the state courts of OR, NM, PA, MA, WA, CO and NC. These youth and others are achieving judicial decisions that lay the necessary groundwork to establish the overall legal right to a healthy atmosphere and stable climate.
The OCT youth front is also directing a federal lawsuit, orchestrated with former NASA fraudster and warming propagandist Dr. James Hansen. The OCT website informs us: “21 young people from across the United States have filed a landmark constitutional climate change lawsuit against the federal government in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon. Also acting as a Plaintiff is world-renowned climate scientist Dr. James E. Hansen, serving as guardian for future generations and his granddaughter. The Complaint asserts that, in causing climate change, the federal government has violated the youngest generation’s constitutional rights to life, liberty, property, as well as failed to protect essential public trust resources.”
According to Our Children’s Trust,
The Complaint alleges the Federal Government is violating the youth’s constitutional rights by promoting the development and use of fossil fuels. These young Plaintiffs are challenging the federal government’s national fossil fuel programs, as well as the proposed Jordan Cove LNG export terminal in Coos Bay, OR. Plaintiffs seek to hold President Obama and various federal agencies responsible for continued fossil fuel exploitation. The Federal Government has known for decades that fossil fuels are destroying the climate system. No less important than in the Civil Rights cases, Plaintiffs seek a court order requiring the President to immediately implement a national plan to decrease atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (“CO2”) to a safe level: 350 ppm by the year 2100.
The OCT website features a press photo of Hansen with his granddaughter (and litigant) Sophie and lists Hansen as one of its official allies on its “Our Allies” page. Also notably listed as allies are Jonathan Overpeck, Stefan Rahmstorf, James Gustave Speth, and Kevin Trenberth, all of whom have notoriously exploited their institutional positions and scientific credentials in the service of anthropogenic (man-made) global warming (AGW) alarmist propaganda. The OCT website does not provide access to annual reports that might show who is actually funding the youth plaintiffs, and the trust did not return calls to The New American before this story went online. However, a glance at the “Our Allies” page shows the usual activist groups whose finances are more public: Sierra Club, Greenpeace, 350.org, Western Environmental Law Center, Texas Environmental Law Center, Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide, Global Call for Climate Action, TckTckTck, WildEarthGuardians, Earth Guardians, and Global Kids. These groups have taken in hundreds of millions of dollars from the big tax-exempt foundations (Rockefeller, Ford, Gates, Soros, Turner), federal and state agencies, and the United Nations. Collectively, the AGW alarm lobby has collected billions of dollars, much of it taken forcefully from the American taxpayers by the governments that are now pressing for even more taxing and regulating power — allegedly, to save us from global warming. Undoubtedly, when the OCT’s financial sources are revealed, they will turn out to be feeding from the same trough.
