Approval of Sharia Law in U.S.? It’s ALARMINGLY High
What would you say upon hearing that 43 percent of a young demographic in America views Sharia law positively? Perhaps you’d complain about the rate of immigration exceeding the rate of assimilation. Now consider this:
That 43 percent is young likely American voters in general — not just Muslim Americans.
Now, perhaps these youthful citizens ought to speak to an age mate, 24-year-old Anojan Sivarasa. Sivarasa was just sentenced to five years in prison in Saudi Arabia for a Facebook post critical of Muhammad.
That, though, apparently wasn’t enough. The prosecutor wanted the man tried under Sharia law, and so late last month he got a Sharia “enhancement.”
A death sentence.
Yes, really.
As for the results of American education’s death (the current story), Rasmussen Reports wrote last Friday that a new survey
by Rasmussen Reports and Our Republic finds that 21% of Likely U.S voters have at least a somewhat positive opinion of sharia, a system of Islamic religious principles and law. Fifty-seven percent (57%) view sharia negatively.
… Positive views of sharia are much higher among younger voters, including 43% of voters ages 18 to 24 and 39% of those ages 25 to 29. By contrast, just 16% of those 40 and older view sharia positively.
A similar trend is apparent on other questions. For example, 83% of all Likely Voters oppose allowing sharia to become the legal code for everyone in an American town, city, or state, even if a majority of residents wanted it. However, 27% of voters under 30 would support allowing a community to adopt sharia under those circumstances, compared to just two percent (2%) of those 40 and older.…
Well, many American Muslims will be happy to hear about that. Because another poll years ago found that a majority of them, 51 percent, believe American Muslims should be allowed to govern themselves with Sharia law and not U.S. civil law.
But it could be worse (maybe). A Tuesday city council meeting in Iowa opened with a prayer to the devil, concluding with “Hail Satan.”
Toxic Empathy?
But it’s “Hail Wokeness” that may explain young people’s Sharia sympathies. As The Federalist reported Tuesday:
The reason American youth may be trending this way, according to Justin Haskins, president of Our Republic, is a lack of understanding about the “value [of] the Constitution and the protections it provides.”
“Too many have been taught to see constitutional limits as obstacles to progress, especially when those limits stand in the way of policies they believe would help groups they view as oppressed,” Haskins says. “Because Muslims are widely perceived by young people as an oppressed or marginalized group, I suspect many default to a sympathetic view of policies associated with Islam without seriously considering whether those policies are compatible with constitutional freedoms. The irony is that, in doing so, they may be undermining the very rights they claim to care about.”
Well, we certainly are getting something for the $1.64 trillion we spend on schooling yearly — unfortunately, it’s not education.
This story may, however, dovetail with events overseas. Per The Federalist again:
These [Rasmussen] findings are particularly relevant as the world watches students in France torch the country, helped by young denizens who also express a growing support of Sharia law, with that support being driven by a Muslim population embracing a strict religious observance of Islam. The polling stateside — coupled with recent numbers from the State Department noting “refugee admissions from 45 majority-Muslim countries stood at 21,096 in December 2024 — Joe Biden’s final month in office” — suggests that similar to what’s happening in France, support for Sharia might be imported alongside immigration from Muslim nations.
Do note, though, that this “refugee”-admission immigration has plummeted under President Donald Trump. The 21,096 December 2024 figure declined to 808 in February 2026 — a drop of about 96 percent.
Tales of Sharia
Yet since so many Americans are cottoning to Sharia, perhaps it’s helpful to examine what its application would bring.
Earlier I mentioned Anojan Sivarasa, who’s currently facing capital punishment. Sivarasa isn’t even a Saudi citizen, mind you, but a Sri Lankan who was working in the Islamic kingdom. His trespass?
During online June arguments, a poster made a derogatory comment about the Hindu deity Shiva. Sivarasa responded with a remark about Muhammad — though even AI couldn’t find an official record of what it actually was. A screenshot was taken, though, and it was deemed “blasphemous.”
The rest is history, and so will poor Anojan be, unless his defenders’ current lobbying efforts are successful.
But Sivarasa is hardly alone. Just consider the case of poor Asia Bibi.
In June 2009, Bibi committed an apparently unpardonable sin. After being asked to fetch some water with a jug, she, a Christian, took a sip before handing it to her Muslim co-workers.
They were outraged.
Many Muslims, you see, believe non-Muslims are “impure” and unworthy of drinking from their vessels. An argument ensued, and words were exchanged. As to what happened next, the BBC related in 2019:
Five days later, the police barged their way into Asia’s house and accused her of insulting the Prophet Muhammad. Outside was a mob, including the village cleric who had accused her of blasphemy. Asia was dragged outside.
The mob brazenly began to beat her, right in front of the police. She was arrested and charged with blasphemy.
As was Sivarasa, Bibi was ultimately sentenced to death. She was lucky, however: After a nine-plus-year ordeal, her defenders finally succeeded in getting her released. She had spent spent more than eight years in solitary confinement.
Overall, perhaps hundreds of people yearly are imprisoned under Sharia blasphemy laws. In Pakistan alone, at least 17 individuals were sentenced to death on that basis in 2019.
In addition, Sharia delivers female-genital mutilation, child marriage (as young as eight), and compulsory hijab-wearing laws.
But, hey, at least young Americans feel good about Sharia. I mean, they’re under enough stress already trying to figure out what “gender” they are.
