The Spiritual Foundation of American Independence
AT A GLANCE
• America’s great experiment in freedom could never have succeeded without a moral and religious people.
• Many of the Colonies formed in America were animated by religious principles.
• Prior to the Revolutionary War, a great religious awakening fired the hearts and minds of the people.
• The moral foundation of America made possible limited government under the Constitution.
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the separation of America from the British Empire, many individuals will be remembered among those who made it happen.
For example, without the persistence of Samuel Adams and his creation of the Sons of Liberty, the Colonies might never have obtained independence. His Committees of Correspondence were critical to the organization of resistance to British tyranny. As Adams said, “It does not take a majority to prevail … but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brush fires of freedom in the minds of men.”
Then there was Patrick Henry’s stirring oratory. There was also Thomas Jefferson, who penned the Declaration of Independence, and John Adams, who nominated George Washington to the post of commander in chief of the Continental Army.
