2A for Today | “The Shot Heard Round the World”
On April 18, 1775, a column of roughly 700 British Regulars marched out of Boston under orders from General Thomas Gage. Their mission was to seize and destroy Colonist munitions hidden outside Concord, Massachusetts. They expected a disorganized resistance; what they encountered was a well-armed militia that had been warned by Paul Revere and other messengers. The battles at the Lexington village green and Concord’s North Bridge ignited the American War for Independence. But what was the spark that lit the fuse? British gun control.
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was written to ensure that the people would never be rendered defenseless against tyranny — and during the American Revolution a quarter-century earlier, a well-regulated militia comprised of the people proved essential to securing a free Republic. Today, as federal overreach and disarmament schemes threaten our God-given rights, the valuable lessons of the Revolution prove the importance of the Second Amendment.
British Gun Control: The Spark for Independence
For months, British authorities had enforced a campaign of disarming Colonists. Gage, the military governor, moved aggressively to confiscate gunpowder and arms from public storehouses under Parliament’s Coercive Acts, which stripped Massachusetts of self-government after the Boston Tea Party of 1773. British troops seized powder from Charlestown and artillery from Cambridge on August 31, 1774, almost triggering an armed uprising when nearly 20,000 Colonists mobilized in response.
