American Exceptionalism: World Cup Tourists See the Real America — and Love It!
AT A GLANCE
• World Cup tourists had preconceived notions of America.
• Coming here, they found out they were wrong.
• America was better than they thought!
“I have always found Americans by far the politest people in the world,” wrote G.K. Chesterton in his 1922 book What I Saw in America. Admittedly, of course, much has changed in the last 100 years. What hasn’t changed, apparently, is how foreign tourists react when going beyond New York City or Washington, D.C., and seeing the real America.
They go gaga.
This was evident with FIFA World Cup visitors who traveled through our heartland. In fact, many were swooning, exhibiting greater love for America than a lot of Americans do. This is a great opportunity to take stock of what a wonderful, unique country we’re blessed to have. Introducing the World Cup story, commentator Sloan Oliver wrote June 24:
