In American politics today, much noise is made about the subject of foreign interference. While the Left has often hijacked the phrase to promote their conspiracy theories about Donald Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia, real foreign interference is taking place — and many Democrats even cheer it on.
Mexico’s leftist president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), has regularly made headlines by injecting himself into the United States’ affairs, particularly with regard to the migration question.
As The New American recently reported, Lopez Obrador has had an ongoing feud with Texas Governor Greg Abbott (a Republican) because of the latter’s attempts to use state authority to curtail illegal migration, which has seen an explosion under the lax enforcement policies of the Joe Biden administration.
Referencing a law signed by Abbott that empowers law enforcement in the Lone Star State to arrest illegal aliens and compel them to either leave the country or be prosecuted on misdemeanor charges for illegally crossing the border, AMLO said his foreign ministry is working on challenging the “inhumane” legislation.
“The Texas governor acts that way because he wants to be the Republican vice presidential candidate and wants to win popularity with these measures,” said Lopez Obrador, making the dispute personal. “He’s not going to win anything. On the contrary, he is going to lose support because there are a lot of Mexicans in Texas, a lot of migrants.”
The Mexican president has taken the fight to American conservatives by calling upon American citizens of Mexican descent to vote against Republicans, specifically against Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. He also launched an information campaign targeting Mexicans in the United States to mobilize them against strict migration policies, which he says are an “offense against the people of Mexico, a lack of respect for our independence, our sovereignty.”
While the efficacy of AMLO’s actions has not been measured, the situation nevertheless shows the potential danger for a nation when it allows an exorbitant number of foreign nationals to reside within its borders — more than can realistically be acclimated and assimilated into the nation.
Under Biden’s virtual open-door border policy, migrant encounters in 2023 were in the neighborhood of 3 million. The abuse of the asylum process the Biden administration encourages means that many of these individuals who are detained at the border are given free entry into the country on the grounds that they will be processed for asylum.
Most of these are economic migrants who are coming here illegally to make money, not because they truly want to adopt the American language and culture or become part of American society. This means the population of foreign nationals whose allegiance is to their place of origin — not to their host nation — is growing. It is these people who are perfect targets for influence by a foreign leader like AMLO. If all these migrants are eventually given citizenship and the franchise, the electoral effects for America could be transformative and catastrophic.
To understand just how consequential mass migration can be, Americans need look no further than their own history. Texas, of course, was once part of Mexico and was populated by Mexicans. But the mass migration of Texians, Anglo-Americans who settled in Texas in droves in search of land and economic opportunity, radically shifted the demographics.
Eventually Texians’ numbers allowed them to become the dominant political force and they declared independence from Mexico, gaining it in the Texas Revolution and becoming an independent republic for nine years, until they joined the United States in 1845. This annexation contributed to the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, which proved devastating to Mexico.
Mass migration from south of the border is making it possible for the reverse to happen: If foreign nationals from Latin America and their descendants become the dominant demographic, they are likely to pursue policies that would benefit their home countries more than the United States. It should be noted that even today, Mexicans are still bitter over the Mexican-American War and dream about the “Reconquista” — one day taking back the territories that formerly belonged to Mexico.
While it isn’t likely that states such Texas, New Mexico, California, and Arizona would ever formally break away from the United States (they wouldn’t want to give up all the federal money from Washington, D.C.), foreign politicians such as Lopez Obrador would nevertheless be more than happy to gain leverage over America’s government by having strong influence over a reliable voting bloc in the U.S. who could be manipulated via media platforms such as Univision and Telemundo.
In short, mass migration is leading to the creation of a foreign fifth column within America’s borders that undermines the nation’s sovereignty, amounting to an act of war against the United States.
What good is it to have the world’s greatest military and a complex national security apparatus if none of it can stop the invasion happening right at the border?
