Beware the Wolf

In regard to your story in the September 3 issue “Who’s Behind a Constitutional Convention?” my family and I found out the hard way back in the latter 1980s that Mike Farris was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. We were embroiled in a struggle to homeschool our four children. At the time, New York essentially had no statewide laws on homeschooling, nor was there any power given the state government via its constitution to regulate this area of parental responsibility.

Farris sold us and others out. He led a few well-meaning but misled Christian homeschooling organizations down the garden path as well. Rather than support a black-and-white argument that New York State or people working for the state had no constitutional authority to “police” homeschool families, period, he actually worked with state educational and other officials to craft uniform regulations to control homeschool families, curriculum, etc. He claimed to do this so that homeschoolers were treated the same everywhere in New York State. To him, the fact that this ceded power to state officials over families and children that it never had via New York’s constitution was irrelevant.

We knew way back then Farris was a phony. Others are finding out belatedly.
