Why Malign Trump?

William Jasper’s June 6 “Trump” article (“Trump: Will He Be Controlling or Controlled?”) was very disappointing, coming from The John Birch Society. Early in the article, Jasper disavows Trump, and then goes on to agree with the mainstream media that Trump is “crass, crude, vulgar.” Jasper may as well have said, “don’t vote for Trump.” For years the Society has vocally condemned all the “Free Trade” agreements that the United States has entered, has been very critical of the onslaught of illegal immigrants into the United States and Europe, has been very critical of the Washington “insiders,” has been pro Second Amendment, etc. Here comes Trump espousing the very same ideals that the Society has vocalized for years, and Jasper essentially maligns him.

This is puzzling at the very least. Trump sounds more conservative and patriotic than many voters have heard since Reagan. I would’ve expected the Society to endorse Trump at this point. By casting such an obvious shadow of doubt about Trump, the Society is de facto endorsing Hillary. The Society needs to figure out what it wants to be — an eternal critic or a pragmatic guiding light. Good luck finding the perfect candidate who can win in November.
