I was born in tyranny, in communist Romania in 1980. My father served two prison terms for failed defection attempts from that authoritarian hellhole. He wanted so badly to move his family to a place where we could live in freedom that he risked everything. Twice.
After eight years of bureaucratic finagling, we eventually ended up in the country that had proven to be the greatest beacon of hope and liberty in history.
Our American story is one shared by many, whether they be immigrants fleeing tyranny in China, Venezuela, Russia, or Cuba in pursuit of freedom.
