Leftist DA in LA: Myriad Misdemeanors Won’t Be Prosecuted. Cash Bail Ends. No Death Penalty.

Los Angelenos are about to get the criminal justice “reform” they voted for, and they’re going to get it good and hard.

George Gascón, the man they elected Los Angeles County district attorney on November 3 with big bucks from George Soros, was sworn in on December 7. He will not prosecute myriad crimes, and will end cash bail and not seek the death penalty.

Even worse, he will start scrutinizing police and their “use of force” going back to 2012.

All of which means Gascón’s top priority is protecting criminals, in turn a top priority of the radical Left.

Feel Free to Trespass, Harass People

Among the misdemeanors that Gascón has decided not to prosecute are these, Fox LA’s Bill Melugin tweeted:

  • Trespassing
  • Disturbing the peace
  • Driving without license
  • Prostitution
  • Resisting arrest

In other words, if one of the city’s many thugs refuses to leave someone’s property, then fights with a cop who tries to remove him, Gascón won’t prosecute.

But the list goes on:

  • Criminal threats
  • Drug possession
  • Minor with alcohol
  • Drinking in public
  • Under the influence of a controlled substance
  • Public intoxicating
  • Loitering

Those “misdemeanor charges shall be declined or dismissed before arraignment and without conditions unless exceptions or factors for consideration exist,” the leftist wrote.

Even worse, “these charges do not constitute an exhaustive list. Each deputy district attorney is encouraged to exercise his or her discretion in identifying a charge falling within the spirit of this policy directive and proceed in accordance with its mandate.”

In keeping with his new policy of permitting petty criminals to rule the streets, Gascón ended cash bail for those crimes. “The  negative consequences of cash bail have fallen unequally on the shoulders of low-income communities of color in Los Angeles County,” he wrote.

Criminals with money can post bail. Poor criminals cannot. Criminals are poor usually because they don’t work, but in any event Gascón’s directive is very clear on one thing.

The presumption shall be to release individuals pretrial. …

All individuals shall receive a presumption of own recognizance release without conditions. Conditions of release may only be considered when necessary to ensure public safety or return to court. …

[Deputy district attorneys] shall not request cash bail for any misdemeanor, non-serious felony, or non-violent felony offense.

So cops probably won’t arrest criminals, and if they do, jailers will immediately release them.

If that’s not bad enough Melugin added, the new DA “is creating a use of force review board to take a look at police shootings going back to 2012, and has decided to reopen four cases so far. No longer prosecuting juveniles as adults. Will be looking to resentence at least 20,000 people sentenced under Jackie Lacey.”

Lacey was Gascón’s opponent.

No Death Penalty

Unsurprisingly, Gascón will not seek the death penalty.

“A sentence of death is never an appropriate resolution in any case,” he wrote, a rather sweeping statement given the Manson and Simpson murders

The office will strive to ensure that all actions taken are consistent with this policy, including refraining from filing letters stating an intention to seek the death penalty, filing briefs, seeking discovery, or making arguments in court that indicate that the death penalty is an appropriate sentence.

Of course, the reason is “racism,” which is “inextricably intertwined” with the death penalty.

“Numerous studies have found that race influences who is sentenced to die in this country and in California,” where 85 percent of those on death row are “people of color,” he continued:

In light of its unequal application to people of color, the death penalty inflicts an extraordinary amount of harm to the moral authority of our justice system. In addition, the death penalty serves no penological purpose as state sanctioned killings do not deter crime, and any retributive value of the death penalty is undermined by California’s dysfunctional death penalty system.

Soros Elected Him

The Los Angeles Times reported that Gascón outspent his black woman opponent, Jackie Lacy, $12.4 million to $7 million.

About 35 percent of that total came from three people:

  • Communist Soros: $2.25 million
  • “Philanthropist Patty Quillin, wife of Reed Hastings: 1.653 million
  • Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO, husband of Quillin

Gascón was district attorney in San Francisco from 2011 through 2019, when he left the city to care for his mother in Los Angeles.

“During Gascón’s tenure in San Francisco from 2011 to 2019, property crime surged by 49%, driven by an unprecedented increase in vehicle break-ins, records show,” the Times reported. “Violent crime also increased 15% in the same time frame.”

Gascón’s picked his successor Chesa Boudin, the child of communist terrorists, and another prosecutor who won’t prosecute criminals.

Unsurprisingly, crime is rising in San Francisco.
