Almost 200 Democrats proved again last week that illegal aliens are “the people we care about most.”
They voted against H.R. 7511, the Laken Riley Act, which would have condemned President Joe Biden for opening the border and aiding and abetting an illegal-alien invasion of the United States. The measure also required the secretary of homeland security to detain any illegal arrested for any type of theft, and permitted the states to sue the secretary if his immigration policies harm them.
Georgia GOP Representative Mike Collins introduced the legislation after the murder of nursing student Laken Riley near the University of Georgia in Athens. The suspect is one of Biden’s criminal “migrants,” whom the administration released at the southwest border to commit crimes against Americans.
The bill passed overwhelmingly.
The Murder
Riley’s life ended on February 22, when Venezuelan illegal Jose Ibarra, police allege, murdered her on a jogging trail near the university campus.
He is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, malice and felony murder, and aggravated battery and assault. He is also charged with hindering a 911 call and concealing a death.
Ibarra jumped the border and was caught on September 8, 2022, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement confessed that authorities “paroled” him for “further processing.”
But the “parole” merely “processed” him to commit crimes, police allege. He landed in New York with his wife after he was released, and immediately began committing crimes. He and his wife separated, and he traveled to Georgia to live with his illegal-alien brother, Diego. The two were arrested for shoplifting at a Walmart in October 2023, and the murder suspect was arrested again at the same Walmart in December.
Police arrested Diego during the murder probe because he used a fake green card to get a job at the university. The school fired him when he did not provide further documentation that he was eligible to work.
Collins pinned the murder on Biden.
“The blood of Laken Riley is on the hands of Joe Biden, Alejandro Mayorkas, and the government of Athens-Clarke County,” he wrote on X:
To put this in simpler terms: if this border was secure, and Athens not a sanctuary city, Laken Riley would be alive. She would still be talking to her family, hanging out with friends, studying to be a nurse, and working toward serving her community and saving the lives of others. Instead, she is dead because the people who took an oath to preserve our Constitution and faithfully execute our laws refuse to do so because they think it benefits them politically.
The Bill
So Collins introduced the Laken Riley Act, which would have amended the Immigration and Nationality Act.
The bill indicts Biden for the murder on two counts: The administration should not have released Ibarra, and should have arrested him after he committed and was arrested for crimes in New York City and Athens.
It says Biden “should publicly denounce his administration’s immigration policies that resulted in the murder of Laken Riley.”
And Biden should stop future murders “by ending the catch-and-release of illegal aliens, increasing immigration enforcement, detaining and removing criminal aliens, reinstating the Remain in Mexico policy, ending his abuse of parole authority, and securing the United States borders.”
The bill requires the detention of any illegal who “is charged with, is arrested for, is convicted of, admits having committed, or admits committing acts which constitute the essential elements of any burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting offense.”
That is a direct slap at disgraced and impeached Department of Homeland Security chief Alejandro Mayorkas, who stopped the detention and deportation of illegals merely because they committed crimes.
Lastly, state attorneys general can sue the secretary of DHS if his policies harm the states and cause more than $100 in damages.
Surprisingly, 37 Democrats voted with 214 Republicans to pass the bill 251-170. The measure must still pass the Senate, which is likely impossible under Democratic control. And even if it did, Biden wouldn’t sign it.
The 170 Democrats who voted against the bill protected the “people we care about most,” as Connecticut Democratoc Senator Chris Murphy famously called illegal aliens.
Perhaps worse than the 170 Democrats who voted to protect murder suspects such as Ibarra was Biden’s apology for calling him an “illegal.”
Biden committed that unpardonable offense during his State of the Union address, when Georgia GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shouted “say her name.”
“I know how to say her name,” Biden replied.
But he called Laken “Lincoln, an innocent young girl who was killed by an illegal,” which understandably infuriated her mother.
During an interview with MSNBC leftist Jonathan Capehart, Biden apologized for using the term “illegal” to describe Ibarra.
“I shouldn’t have used illegal,” Biden said. “I should’ve … It’s undocumented.”
He also claimed illegals “built the country” and are “the reason our economy is growing.”
Understandably, Biden’s apology invited fury from Republicans, notably his opponent in November.
“Joe Biden went on television and apologized for calling Laken’s murderer an illegal,” former President Donald Trump said. “Biden should be apologizing for apologizing to this killer.”
“Disgusting,” Greene wrote on X. “Joe Biden just apologized to the illegal alien animal who brutally murdered Laken Riley.”
