Wolverton’s Warning | Truth, Virtue, and Liberty: The Triple Foundation of a Free People
The three chief blessings bestowed upon mankind are Truth, Virtue, and Liberty. Remove any one, and civilization collapses; preserve them all, and man stands erect in the image of God and the dignity of freedom. These are not mere ornaments of society; they are its pillars. Our duty, as patriots and as men, is to defend and advance them with all the zeal of our souls.
Our first duty is to educate our countrymen. Ignorance is the chain of tyranny; truth is the sword that severs it. Why do nations submit to tyrants and bear injustice like beasts of burden? Because they are kept in darkness, robbed of knowledge, and taught that obedience to power is virtue.
Enlighten them, and they will rise as men. Show them that government exists not to rule but to protect — that it is an expedient for preserving rights, not for distributing favors — and they will no longer kneel to political idols.
