Imagine yourself in this situation: It’s October 1, 2021, when most of the world has Covid blinders on and all other health concerns play second fiddle. You have a 19-year-old daughter with Down syndrome who is showing signs of a slight cold or seasonal allergies. A home test kit returns positive for Covid-19, so you get her a doctor’s prescription for ivermectin and start monitoring her oxygen levels with a store-bought pulse oximeter.
On October 6, her pulse ox drops to 88 percent, when it should be above 90. Though her symptoms do not appear any worse, you decide to play it safe and take her to an urgent care clinic.
The staff, suffering from collective Covid myopia, immediately recommends the hospital emergency room for this patient who walked into their facility with sniffles but has tested positive for Covid. Concerned for her safety, you follow their advice. Again, your daughter walks with you — this time into the emergency room.
