Remembering John Birch 80 Years Later

John Larabell

August 25, 1945 was a day not recognized by many Americans, as WWII had just come to an end and the nation was still in a state of euphoria after a resounding victory over Germany and Japan. But this date would turn out to have profound historical significance and was a harbinger of events that would shape our world for generations.

On that day, Communist Chinese forces executed an American soldier in what some have called the first casualty of the Cold War. The murder of Captain John Birch and the ensuing U.S. government coverup, along with the communist takeover of China and the infiltration of communist agents into the U.S. government and institutions, changed the world as we know it. But John Birch’s death was not in vain, and would not go unremarked.

John Morrison Birch was born May 28, 1918 to Presbyterian missionaries in northern India. After returning to the states when John was a young child, his parents joined the Baptist church, and John would later become a Baptist missionary himself. He was sent off to China during the years of Japanese occupation before American entry into WWII. While there, Birch quickly gained the trust of the Chinese by learning their language and adopting their diet and customs.
