Attempted Robbery on Cab Driver
Cab drivers are frequently the victims of crimes since they usually work late hours, get paid in cash, and drive in high-crime neighborhoods. It is for this reason that a lot of them carry a concealed firearm for protection against criminals. WTHI-TV 10 reported out of Terre Haute, Indiana, on May 20 about one such cab driver, whose handgun saved his life. The driver for First Choice Cab company picked up 17-year-old Daivionne Young in downtown Terre Haute and drove him to an apartment complex.
The driver suspected his passenger had ill intentions, but he thought that maybe the worst that Daivionne would do to him might be to run away from the cab without paying. Daivionne had other intentions. When the driver let Daivionne out, Daivionne pulled out a gun and demanded that the driver hand over all of his cash. The driver, however, wasted no time in grabbing his own gun and firing at the suspect, injuring him. Terre Haute Police Public Information Officer Ryan Adamson posted on social media about the event and wrote that “the cab driver pulled out a gun and shot the suspect. Suspect took off. He was located by our uniform division, is in custody, he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.” Adamson also wrote that the suspect will be charged as an adult for armed robbery, and investigators are not looking for any other suspects. Police did say that the driver was not injured in the incident.
Vicki Schafer was an eyewitness to what occurred and told WTHI-TV 10 that she “was upstairs working and I heard a couple of gunshots. I came out on the patio and I see a black man running with a backpack ... and I’m pretty sure he had a knife in his hand, but I’m not really sure, but as soon as I see that, I kind of went back inside.” Investigators believe the cab driver acted within his legal right to self-defense under the law and at the time of this reporting there were no plans to press charges against him for the shooting.
