REAL ID, Real Idiocracy
AT A GLANCE
• REAL ID is a setup for a surveillance state.
• REAL ID federalizes driver licensing.
• Contrary to claims, REAL ID is not more secure and does not provide protection against terrorism or open borders.
• A digital health ID is also in the works.
Walk through any major U.S. airport, and you’ll see Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s daytime soap face beaming down at you from an overhead monitor.
“If you plan on traveling, we need your help to prevent delays and to prove your identity,” she cajoles. “These IDs keep our country safe, because they help prevent fraud, and they enhance security.” Lest anyone object, she adds the resistance-stifling appeal, “Please do your part to protect our country!”
Noem is stumping for REAL ID, a high-tech form of federally compliant state-issued identification that’s reputedly more secure than a standard-issue driver’s license. Former U.S. President George W. Bush signed the REAL ID Act in 2005 in answer to recommendations from his 9/11 Commission. The law was to have been implemented in 2008, but political resistance and logistical challenges stood in the way.
