Looking Backward — and Forward
The John Birch Society, the parent organization of this magazine, was once almost alone in calling for the United States to get out of the United Nations. No more!
At the founding meeting of the JBS in 1958, founder Robert Welch warned that part of the subversive plan to bring about global tyranny was “to induce the gradual surrender of American sovereignty, piece by piece and step by step, to various international organizations — of which the United Nations is the outstanding but far from the only example.” Then, in 1962, the JBS blazed the trail to expose this world-government threat by launching its campaign to “Get US Out! of the United Nations.” The campaign, which included Get US Out! billboards throughout the country, captured widespread public attention. For a while at least, this campaign was ahead of its time.
Back in those days, the overwhelming majority of Americans, it seemed, believed the establishment line that the UN was “mankind’s last best hope for peace.” And how was this peace to be achieved? By empowering the UN, of course. Yet, as the JBS has pointed out, a global government powerful enough to enforce world peace would also be powerful enough to impose world tyranny. Moreover, as the UN has demonstrated through its own actions, it is no friend of America or champion of our God-given rights.
