2A for Today | Publix Stands Tall for Liberty and Lawful Carry

In an age when corporate cowardice too often masquerades as virtue, one of Florida’s largest and most beloved companies has just done something refreshingly rare: It stood up for the Constitution.

Publix, the Sunshine State’s homegrown grocery giant, has announced that it will allow customers to openly carry firearms inside its stores, in accordance with Florida law. The decision comes on the heels of a Florida appellate court striking down the state’s long-standing open-carry ban as unconstitutional. With its determination, Publix has signaled that it stands with law-abiding citizens — not against them.

For years, Florida’s gun owners could carry concealed, but open carry remained off limits. That changed this fall, when the state’s First District Court of Appeal ruled that prohibiting open carry violated the Florida Constitution and the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment. In the wake of that decision, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody affirmed that open carry is now “the law of the state,” with some exceptions, such as government buildings and polling places. Private businesses and property owners may prohibit open carry if they wish.
