Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs signed HB 2677 today, after the Arizona Senate voted 16 to 14 yesterday to pass the legislation repealing the 1864 law banning abortion in Arizona. Two Republicans — T.J. Shope and Shawnna Bolick — voted with Democrats to pass the bill.

Hobbs said Democrats would continue to work on abortion legislation after repealing the ban, stating on X:

I’m glad to see the Senate answered my call and voted to repeal the 1864 total abortion ban. While this is essential to protecting women’s health, it is just the beginning. I will never stop fighting for women’s reproductive freedoms.

Vice President Kamala Harris responded to the bill’s passage by saying that Congress must continue to work towards removing all abortion restrictions:

I applaud the organizers, advocates, and elected officials who ensured that Arizona’s legislature passed a repeal of the state’s 1800s abortion ban. But let me be clear: Abortion is still banned in Arizona, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Doctors and nurses could still be thrown in jail for providing health care. To truly protect reproductive freedom, Congress must restore the protections of Roe.
