GOP Anti-Tax King Grover Norquist Goes Native at Burning Man

What is a leading conservative tax fighter doing at Burning Man?
In this on-the-ground interview, The New American’s Alex Newman catches up with Grover Norquist, founder of Americans for Tax Reform, about why he has been coming to the Nevada desert gathering since 2013 — and why he says overbearing government, not sexual evil or debauchery, is the real threat to it.
Norquist describes how Bureau of Land Management pressure and bureaucratic concerns about the event not having “enough police” collide with so-called “Burners” who pack in their own food, water, and art. He contrasts that self-reliance with the carelessness of Woodstock and argues that Burning Man works because nobody is assigned a role by the state.
He also explains his coalition theory of liberty: people who want freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, the right to run a business, or the ability to smoke marijuana may never share a pew, but Norquist is convinced they can still defend the same limited government to be left alone.
Stay tuned to The New American to stay up-to-date on our coverage of Burning Man, as an elite team gathered countless hours of footage, photographs, and key insights into this powerful and dark event.
