Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, 16, along with fellow activists Luisa Neubauer, 23, and Angela Valenzuela, 25, have penned an op-ed to coincide with the latest series of “climate strikes” and the United Nations’ COP25 climate-change conference in Madrid. In the op-ed, the climate warriors tacitly admit that the climate-change movement is about much more than the climate.
The piece, published in Project Syndicate, makes clear what many of us have already known. The climate-hysteria movement is more about far-left politics than it is about fighting an existential climatic threat to mankind.
After giving a laundry list of reasons why we need to be afraid of the coming cataclysm, the columnists admit, “That action must be powerful and wide-ranging. After all, the climate crisis is not just about the environment. It is a crisis of human rights, of justice and of political will. Colonial, racist and patriarchal systems of oppression have created and fueled it. We need to dismantle them all. Our political leaders can no longer shirk their responsibilities.”
It’s high time someone in the climate-hysteria movement comes right out and says what the end goal of it is — a systemic overhaul of the entire planet’s cultural, governmental, and economic systems.
Others have hinted at it, but mainly in secrecy or unscripted moments.
Last December, incoming congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) admittedthat the climate-hysteria movement was about far more than the climate. While on stage at an event with Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), AOC let slip that her Green New Deal would “use the transition to 100 percent renewable energy as the vehicle to truly deliver and establish economic, social and racial justice in the United States of America.”
It wasn’t just AOC spouting nonsense in an off-the-cuff moment either. In a Washington Post piece last July, her former chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, allegedly admitted to a colleague that her Green New Deal was never really about climate at all.
“The interesting thing about the Green New Deal is that it wasn’t originally about a climate thing at all,” Chakrabarti reportedly said. “We really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy-thing.”
So, it’s really not surprising that young Ms. Thunberg and her cohorts are finally admitting the obvious — that their sullen words and pronouncements of doom are based as much on radical left-wing politics as they are on the undefined existential threat known as climate change.
The newest round of “climate strikes” began on November 29, and will continue until at least December 6, with hundreds of locations worldwide said to be scheduling large-scale protests. It is the fervent hope of climate hysterics that their movement will take wings owing to the voices of the children — most of whom don’t truly understand what they’re protesting about.
Greta and the others don’t really want to strike, they claim. It’s more like they have to strike: “Striking is not a choice we relish; we do it because we see no other options. We have watched a string of United Nations climate conferences unfold. Countless negotiations have produced much-hyped but ultimately empty commitments from the world’s governments.”
At least they’re right about that. As Greta and the others point out, “Recent research shows that we are on track to produce 120 percent more fossil fuel in 2030 than would be consistent with the 1.5° C limit.”
Question: If the protesters are so worried about increased use of fossil fuels, why are they protesting in the United States and western nations and not China? The United States, at least, is reducing carbon emissions, while in the Paris Climate agreement, China only pledges to reach peak output of such emissions by 2030. China has already stated that it’s going to conduct business as usual, building more coal-fired energy plants and, in general, not really caring about what they might be doing to the climate. Why are the worst “climate offenders” in the world — namely the most populous nation, China, with 1.5 billion people — spared the attentions of the young climate warriors?
Perhaps it’s because the People’s Republic of China already has the type of government that young Greta and her cohorts are ultimately calling for: an authoritarian communist dictatorship.
