Britain’s Sunday Express ran a report on August 2 stating that British SAS (Special Air Service) units in Syria have dressed in black and carried ISIS flags in an apparent attempt to disguise themselves as ISIS fighters.
The Express noted that more than 120 SAS forces are currently in Syria taking part in Operation Shader, which has been tasked with destroying ISIS equipment and munitions that the terrorist insurgents continuously move to avoid the U.S.-led coalition air strikes.
Operation Shader is the code name given to the British participation in the ongoing military intervention against ISIS. It began on August 7, 2014 as a humanitarian operation to assist the Yazidi people (who are ethnically Kurdish but practice an ancient Mesopotamian religion) with aircraft dropping emergency aid to Yazidis trapped by ISIS on Iraq’s Mount Sinjar. President Obama also authorized “targeted airstrikes” against ISIS militants to protect U.S. military personnel in the area and airdrops of meals and water to thousands of Yazidi and Christian religious minorities trapped on the mountaintop. After the Yazidi were able to evacuate, the British expanded Operation Shader. Following the beheading of a British citizen by ISIS in September 2014, Parliament approved British air strikes against ISIS positions.
The Express explained that the SAS forces in Syria do not clear every operation with London, but are part of a force known as the Coalition Joint Special Operations Task Force, which is under U.S. command.
The units travel in civilian pick-ups, and can even launch their own unmanned drones to scan terrain ahead of them and pinpoint ISIS forces.
In March, Britain’s Defense Secretary Michael Fallon met with the U.S. Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force Lt. General James Terry and the U.K. deputy commander, Major General Bob Bruce, In Kuwait.
During those talks, notes the Express, Fallon reaffirmed the U.K.’s intention to contribute to a U.S.-led task force (Operation Inherent Resolve) whose mission includes training what is described as “the Syrian Moderate Opposition” at training sites across the Middle East.
Fallon said: “ISIL [ISIS] must be defeated in both Iraq and Syria. Our actions and surveillance capabilities are freeing up other countries to strike in Syria. I reiterated today that Britain intends to contribute to the coalition’s training of moderate Syrian opposition.”
The Express also quoted a statement that an unidentified senior military source made to the paper recently:
Essentially, this is what we call penny packet operations — small individual incursions which hopefully join up to create tangible results. The view here is long — it’s about finding and engaging targets, yes, but it’s also about assessing infrastructure and identifying where ISIS is hiding its equipment in order to set the conditions for a potentially larger, future engagement.
While the SAS’s covert operation may make sense from a purely strategic angle, there is much more to the ongoing U.S.-led campaign against ISIS and our announced objective to build a “Syrian moderate opposition” that is widely ignored by the media. Among the most important yet least-known aspects of this background information is that — based on a U.S. intelligence report — the United States helped form and train ISIS from its beginnings.
As incredible as this fact may seem, it was explored thoroughly in an article posted by The New American on May 26, “U.S. Intel: Obama Coalition Supported Islamic State in Syria.”
U.S. support for ISIS began as support for jihadists fighting against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. In some respects, this was similar to the U.S. invasion that removed Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq, producing a power vacuum that ISIS would eventually fill across large areas of the country — virtually most of the country northwest of Baghdad to the Syrian border. Since ISIS has also made strong inroads into Syria, there is reason to believe that if Assad were to be removed from power, ISIS would also increase its presence in that nation, as well. Yet, that possibility has apparently not figured into U.S. strategy in the region.
The New American article cited a 2012 Defense Intelligence Agency report, which was obtained in recent months by watchdog Judicial Watch via a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, that showed that, “contrary to the false narrative peddled by the establishment press, the rise of the savage terror group known as ISIS was actually deliberate policy.”
The article quoted some very revealing information from the DIA report:
The West, Gulf countries [the Islamic regimes ruling Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, etc.], and Turkey support the Syrian opposition.
There is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist [fundamentalist Islam] principality in Eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime.
The report explained, as The New American reported in the February 2012 article, “Al-Qaeda & the West Back Syrian Rebels Against Assad,” that al-Qaeda supported the Syrian uprising from the beginning as well.
The DIA report exposed the lies propagated by the Obama administration, senior U.S. lawmakers, and foreign leaders to convince Americans that the U.S. government should support non-existent “moderate” rebels in Syria. According to the classified document, U.S. authorities were well aware of the fact that (as The New American reported in the above-cited February 2012 article) the rebellion against Assad was being led by radical jihadists — including many of the same forces the U.S. government was ostensibly fighting against in the terror war.
Long after The New American and other media outlets exposed this fact, the DIA report, which was dated August 12, 2012, noted: “The Salafist, the Muslim Brotherhood, and AQI [al-Qaeda in Iraq] are the major forces driving the insurgency in Syria.”
It was from these radical Islamic forces supported by the Obama administration in their fight against Assad that ISIS would emerge. The Defense Department’s intelligence analysts had warned of the consequences that the anti-Assad insurgency in Syria, which the United States backed, could have on Iraq. The DIA report noted:
This creates the ideal atmosphere for AQI [al-Qaeda Iraq] to return to its old pockets in Mosul and Ramadi [two cities in Iraq that are now under ISIS control], and will provide a renewed momentum under the presumption of unifying the jihad among Sunni Iraq and Syria, and the rest of the Sunnis in the Arab world against what it considers one enemy, the dissenters….
ISI [Islamic State in Iraq] could also declare an Islamic state through its union with other terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria, which will create grave danger in regards to unifying Iraq and the protection of its territory.”
As the May article noted: “The New American magazine and many other sources have been reporting much of that information almost since the start of the Western establishment-backed ‘rebellion’ against the Syrian regime.”
More recently, The New American reported that former DIA chief Michael Flynn, during an in-depth Head to Head interview with the Qatari government-sponsored Al Jazeera network, was asked about his agency’s 2012 report. He responded by recalling that despite attempts to downplay the document by the establishment media, he “paid very close attention” to it when it crossed his desk, and that “the intelligence was very clear.”
He said that he had warned the administration against supporting jihadists in Syria, but the Obama administration ignored the warnings and continued providing material support — weapons, PR, communications, funding, training, international legitimacy, and more — to those officially designated terrorist organizations.
Furthermore, noted Flynn, the administration’s decision to ignore the intelligence was not accidental. “I don’t know that they turned a blind eye, I think it was a decision,” he said.
When the Al Jazeera interviewer, Mehdi Hasan, as if not believing his ears, asked Flynn to confirm what he had just said, asking: “A willful decision to support an insurgency that had Salafists, Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood?” Flynn repeated: “It was a willful decision to do what they’re doing.”
Hardly a day goes by that the atrocities perpetrated by ISIS, such as beheading innocent Christian and moderate Muslim civilians, is not in the news. These atrocities create an atmosphere of urgency in which the West, including the United States and Britain, is asked to intervene to stop the slaughter.
But as was confirmed by the DIA’s former head, it was a willful decision for our government to support these barbaric terrorists and help them achieve their position of power in Iraq and Syria.
