WWIII and the “Multipolar” World

World War III: Something people have talked about with dread ever since the beginning of the Cold War; something that has haunted Americans like a specter for decades. After 1991, the fears of such a (potentially) world-ending conflict, at least for Americans, diminished substantially. Now, however, the threat of a new global conflict between great powers seems more likely with each passing month.

Indeed, the world is changing. Gone is the so-called Pax Americana of the 1990s when the United States was the undisputed superpower in a “unipolar” world, able to impose her will anywhere on Earth with little to no opposition. Russia was essentially a failed state; China, for the most part, was yet undeveloped; and American military power was at its zenith. Fast-forward 35 years, and Russia under Vladimir Putin’s rule is once again a great power with a modernized military; China has developed at breakneck speed and is now the world’s manufacturing powerhouse; and military advancements such as drones and hypersonic missiles have neutralized some of America’s advantages.

Add to this the rise and continued expansion of the BRICS economic alliance over the past decade and a half, and we are quickly witnessing a return to a “multi-polar” world order with several great planetary power centers.
