Words Matter: Why We Changed the Name of This Column

“We can never win… unless the promise of what we can build supplies more motivation than the terror of what we must destroy.” Robert Welch wrote these words in The Blue Book of the John Birch Society. In order to bring Welch’s “promise” to our pages, we launched a new column in December 2021 entitled “Faith, Family, Freedom.” We wanted it to reflect a positive attitude in our mission to promote constitutional principles and preserve American ideals.

The column has covered topics such as the bravery of FBI whistleblowers, the tenacity of employees overcoming onerous vaccine mandates, and parents’ victories over critical race theory taught in their children’s schools. Each story focuses on the many successes American patriots have to show for their hard work and dedicated sacrifice. We hope these anecdotes inspire our readers to stay committed despite challenges.

The phrase “Faith, Family, Freedom” is not unique to our magazine, however. The catchy, contemporary expression is often heard in conservative circles. In 1997 the Hoover Institution published its “manifesto for cultural renewal” with three planks: “Family. Faith. Freedom.” The Family Research Council even monetized the term, forming its Faith Family Freedom Fund super PAC to help get Republicans elected in 2024.
