Veterans Deserve Their Rights: Exposing the VA’s Assault on the Second Amendment

America’s veterans — those brave men and women who risked their lives to defend our liberties — deserve more than hollow words of gratitude. They deserve their rights. Yet, for far too long, a pernicious policy within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has unjustly stripped veterans of their Second Amendment-protected rights without due process.

The problem is shockingly straightforward. Bureaucrats within the VA have been submitting the names of veterans who need a fiduciary — someone to assist them in managing their finances — to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Once their names are on this list, they are considered prohibited individuals, and are deprived of their right to purchase or possess a firearm.

The most outrageous part? This happens without any judicial hearing, and without any determination that these veterans pose a danger to themselves or others. In other words, they are presumed guilty and stripped of their rights simply for needing help managing their finances.
