Trump’s Expansionist Plans
There is reason to suspect President Donald Trump wants to make America not only great again, but bigger — the biggest ever.
The president has made repeated overtures to Canada, Greenland, the current operators of the Panama Canal, and the future Riviera of the Mediterranean — the fixer-upper that is the Gaza Strip. Clever negotiation tactics aside, Trump almost assuredly harbors some degree of genuine desire to make America bigger. This isn’t just 4-D chess we’re watching. But hopefully, his personal affinity for real estate and the type of competitive nature that would incentivize him to try to get his name in the Guinness World Records book for Best President Ever do not cloud his judgment.
Trump is likely serious about acquiring Greenland. The same goes for the Panama Canal. Both include legitimate national-security implications and stirred similar conversations before Trump ever ran for president. In the case of the Panama Canal, the transfer of the canal to Panama was illegal because both parties did not agree to the same treaties. But before we get into that, let’s review what the United States owns and how that came to be.
