What Is a Police Officer?
“A police officer is many things. He or she is a son, a daughter, a father, a mother, an uncle, an aunt, and sometimes even a grandparent. Those who wear the badge turn out to be a protector in time of need and a comforter in time of sorrow. Their job calls for them to be a diplomat, a psychologist, a legal expert, a friend, and an inspiration. They suffer from an overdose of publicity about rare instances of brutality or dishonesty. They suffer far more from the notoriety produced by unfounded charges. Too often, acts of heroism go unnoticed and truth is buried under criticism. The fact is that fewer than one-half of one percent of police officers ever discredit their uniform. That’s a better percentage than you’ll find among members of the clergy.”
