Behind the War on Police
Police work has always entailed an element of risk. After all, criminal suspects are sometimes armed and dangerous, and they sometimes respond violently when pursued and caught. But the job is becoming more dangerous because of an escalating war against police that should now be obvious to anyone following the news.
In that war, police have been increasingly targeted for abuse, not just rhetorically but also physically.
For example, on September 12, a gunman ambushed two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who were sitting in a parked police car in Compton. Surveillance video shows the would-be assassin nonchalantly approaching the vehicle from behind and opening fire on the occupants before running away. Miraculously both deputies survived, despite suffering gunshots to the head and face.
