“Good” or Good
TNA’s September 18, 2017 review of Senator Ben Sasse’s book, The Vanishing American Adult, reviews a number of concerning American maladies. In passing comment, it also presents an enigma that seems at least as concerning as the theme of the book. The correspondent notes Senator Sasse’s abysmal Freedom Index constitutional voting score of 77 percent as being “quite high” for the Senate. Huh? A pass is granted with such a wink and nod on a record that indicates that nearly one-fourth of the time, this senator votes in violation of his sacred oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution.
Article VI of the Constitution mandates all who hold office shall take the constitutional oath. Founding Father Noah Webster’s definition of “oath” captures the serious nature of one’s oath: “The person invokes the vengeance of God if he should fail to fulfill it.”
Placing this in a context all should understand: When one enters marriage, he takes a sacred oath of fidelity to his spouse. Who would keep a spouse who was only faithful to that oath 77 percent of the time? If such were the case, the person would be unfaithful “only” one week of every month! A 90-percent record would mean unfaithfulness “only” three days per month. A 99-percent record would mean unfaithfulness “only” one day every three months. Such a spouse would be cast off immediately by anyone but the most broken of souls.
