The Goodness of America
Wildfire Hero
The American Red Cross plays a vital role in providing relief and support to individuals and communities affected by disasters such as wildfires. Among the stories of heroism and compassion during these trying times is that of Jonny Constantine, a Malibu, California, resident who took extraordinary action to save his friends as wildfires threatened their home.
On a smoky December night in Malibu, the Franklin Fire rapidly spread across the hills, illuminating the landscape with an ominous red glow. Constantine noticed the fire nearing his friends’ home and rushed to warn them. “I saw the lights were out, but the bell worked. I kept hitting the button and yelling from their gate to wake up,” Constantine recounted. Smoke and embers filled the air as the fire crept closer. His persistence paid off: After nearly a half hour of trying to get his friends’ attention, they finally woke up and escaped just in time. “I didn’t leave until they were safe,” he said.
Fortunately, a combination of rain, low temperatures, and minimal wind helped contain the Franklin Fire shortly after Constantine’s evacuation efforts. State officials reported that the fire’s activity had significantly decreased by mid-December, with only 13 structures destroyed — a stark contrast to the devastation of previous wildfires.
