Helene’s Heroes
Hurricane Helene tore through the American Southeast with unrelenting force, leaving a trail of devastation in its path. Making landfall near Perry, Florida, on Thursday, September 26, the storm unleashed torrential rain and severe winds, causing catastrophic flooding that inundated homes, washed away roads, and left entire communities submerged. Even north of Florida, in cities such as Atlanta, residents experienced their first-ever flash-flood emergency as rivers and streams surged beyond their banks, trapping people in their homes and vehicles. Emergency crews were overwhelmed, engaging in countless high-water rescues as families sought safety in the face of rising waters.
Yet, even in the midst of Helene’s destruction, stories of American resilience and heroism began to emerge, showcasing the strength of the human spirit in the face of nature’s devastation. While the damage was widespread and lives were upended, there were countless acts of kindness, bravery, and selflessness that offered hope to those affected. In the following stories, we’ll highlight some of the remarkable individuals, organizations, and communities who stepped up when it mattered most, bringing light to the darkness left by the storm.
