Build Your Influence, Educate the Electorate, Save America
This issue’s installment of the Freedom Index offers a powerful tool that many Americans who are sick of politics wish they had. Let me offer some suggestions on how you can best use this tool to build your influence, educate the electorate, and save America.
Let’s start off with the intent of this tool. The Freedom Index and its accompanying tools (Congressional Scorecard and State Scorecard) are meant to be used to increase your elected officials’ adherence to the Constitution, regardless of party affiliation. The John Birch Society has never endorsed a political party or a candidate. Our making such important tools available is only part of the solution. The rest involves you.
To be most effective, these tools need to be distributed among the electorate to educate them on the adherence of their elected officials to the Constitution. After all, our elected officials take an oath to support the Constitution, so We The People need to know how they are supporting the Constitution. And how best to support the Constitution than to obey it? Obeying means to work within the limitations of that grand document. For instance, when Congress legislates, it should only do so by following the confines of Article I. Specifically, Article I, Section 8 lists the enumerated legislative powers of Congress. Unfortunately, the current practice is to use the Necessary and Proper Clause as a catch-all excuse to legislate on topics not listed in Section 8.
