Selective Outrage Over Trump’s Affront
Donald Trump has been taking a lashing for supposedly implying, however vaguely, that if Hillary Clinton won the presidency, maybe gun owners could stop her from nominating anti-Second Amendment Supreme Court judges via assassinating her.
To be fair to Clinton supporters, it did sound to me as if Trump did make an offhanded, ill-thought-out, bad joke about terminating Hillary should she win the presidency. He said, to be specific, “Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish — the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”
But what did Trump, who was speaking extemporaneously, actually mean? He has defended his comment by saying that he meant that Second Amendment supporters have enough political clout that maybe they could stop her from appointing bad judges.
