“I’m 39 years old, and I have to start over from scratch,” Chris Quaglin said, pointing to his surroundings. He and I connected on a video call — I, from the comfort and safety of my home, and he, from what he calls his “office.” It’s the cab of his truck.

That, the clothes on his back, and donations from supporters are all he has, because his now-ex-wife filed for divorce only one week before his 2023 trial on charges related to the January 6, 2021 “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, D.C. The divorce judge awarded Mrs. Quaglin everything the couple owned, along with full custody of their now-four-year-old son.

The child was a newborn when authorities arrested Chris in April 2021, yet the toddler still hasn’t seen his father even though President Donald Trump’s sweeping pardons freed the 39-year-old electrician on January 20. So now that Chris is a “non-felon,” he has traded his J6 attorney for a child-custody lawyer.
