Professor Leaves University After Advocating Shooting Voters
University of Kansas (KU) lecturer Dr. Phillip W. Lowcock, director of international student-athlete support for Kansas Athletics and a lecturer in the school’s Health Sport & Exercise Science Department, called for political violence against men who would have chosen not to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris because she is a woman. He stated during a lecture earlier this semester: “There are going to be some males in our society that will refuse to vote for a potential female president because they don’t think females are smart enough to be president. We can line all those guys up and shoot them, they clearly don’t understand the way the world works. Did I say that? Scratch that from the recording, I don’t want the Deans hearing that I said that.”
Lowcock was placed on administrative leave on October 9 after a video of his comments went viral on X. KU Director for News and Media Relations Erinn Barcomb-Peterson said that Lowcock “offers his sincerest apologies and deeply regrets the situation. His intent was to emphasize his advocacy for women’s rights and equality, and he recognizes he did a very poor job of doing so.”
However, Lowcock allegedly has a history of making inappropriate statements during lectures. One student noted in a March 1, 2024 review on Rate My Professors that the professor “made class very uncomfortable sometimes with making sexual jokes even when it wasn’t related to the topic.”
