Jordan Peterson to Undergo Social-media Training
Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson has agreed to attend social-media training as mandated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario, the governing body for the profession in that province. In 2022, the college determined that Peterson must attend such training or lose his license; the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported on August 8 that the Supreme Court of Canada has refused to hear his appeal of that decision.
As explained by CBC, the college determined that Peterson’s posts on social media, particularly those concerning transgenderism, were “degrading.” They noted specifically a post on X in which he called a former ward councilor who used they/them pronouns an “appalling self-righteous moralizing thing.” The person was not a patient of Peterson’s, and Peterson claims that no patient of his has complained.
Howard Levitt, Peterson’s attorney in the matter, referred to the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the appeal as “a tragic day for Canada,” telling CBC, “It seems ironic, even tragic, that [Peterson], one of the most adept persons in social media in this country and beyond, is going to attend ‘re-education’ from people inherently less skilled and knowledgeable than he is himself. The decision is a tragedy for freedom of speech in this country.” Peterson himself believes the goal of the training is to “make me into an entirely different sort of creature than I am.”
